Nothing changes if nothing changes

I'm really good at reading about the things I want to do. I've read so many books on writing novels, I watch endless videos on rehab for my wonky joints and exercise programmes. I read about rest and relaxation. I research all the projects I want to do around my house...

But thinking about, reading about, watching about change is not how it happens. Change requires action. You have to change something if you want something to change.

Take the condition of burnout, for instance. One of the major ways to deal with your burnout is to rest. But that's not the whole story.

You can go to bed for a year. You can sleep till your body refuses to sleep anymore. You can do nothing but rest. But if you don't change anything about the way you actually go about your life – if you don't change what you say yes to, what you say no to, what you put up with, and which things you choose to do (or not do) – you'll be back in burnout in a matter of days.

I know. I've tried it.

Just resting to cure your burnout is like mopping the floor while the tap is still running into an overflowing bath. You're dealing with the water on the floor, but not stopping the source of the problem.

At the very least, you need to pull out the plug, but switching off the tap is the best course of action.

So, whether you're feeling burnt out, or just on the verge of it, what are you doing to change things? Mopping? Pulling out the plug? Or turning off the taps?

Most of us can spot other people's taps easily, but we're standing too close, and panicking too much about the puddle on the floor (which is often us) to see our own.

That's where coaching comes in – someone like me can help you to put down the mop for a minute, see the bigger picture, and work out which tap to turn off first.

If you're ready to stop mopping and start making real changes, let's talk. I'd love nothing more than to help you get your feet dry again.
