When the right way feels wrong

Part of adding coaching to my existing writing business has been trying to figure out how to get more clients through the door. And so I got busy trying to create a comprehensive sales strategy that looked perfect on paper – but which just didn't sit right with me.

Coaching is a vulnerable space for many, and I felt like standing up on social media with a virtual sandwich board was just entirely the wrong approach.

After much avoidance and feeling stuck and grumpy and irritated, I got to the point to today where I realised that just because something works for others doesn't mean it's right for me. And the relief! It has freed up my brain to think about how I want to run this little arm of my business; how I want to show up for you, my clients past and present, and those still waiting for me.

And then it occurred to me how this mirrors what so many of us do – in our careers, our relationships, in parenting, and even our self-care. We follow the "proven" path instead of trusting our own compass.

So I have some questions for you:

  • Where are you following someone else's "right way" but feeling increasingly uncomfortable?
  • What would you do differently if you trusted your instincts completely?
  • What advice have you been given that sounds smart but feels wrong for you?

Sometimes the most radical – and liberating – thing we can do is admit that the conventional wisdom isn't working for us: and that's okay. Sometimes that's what helps us to get unstuck.

And if you need help unpacking an area where you feel like things just aren't feeling right, you know where to find me.
